My “Happy Meal” experience

A recent trip to McDonalds brought back memories of a recent blog post I did back in May about fast food restaurants and how well they cater for allergies. You can read this article here: mcdonaldshappymeal1Allergy junkies – is fast food OK?. In practise it can be just as frustrating to actually know that nearly everything on the menu contains something you can’t eat, and as I stood reading the menu my heart sank. I can eat the hash browns and chips, but this was the evening time so what could I have?

Faced with a fifteen minute window, within which we must find calorific sustenance, we found ourselves in everyone’s highstreet favourite McDonalds. They can provide an A4 menu of every item on their menu and the allergens they contain, it’s on the back of the paper tray covers they use, so just ask for one when you’re ordering and they will give you one to help you decide.

In practise it can be just as frustrating to actually know that nearly everything on the menu contains something you can’t eat, and as I stood reading the menu my heart sank. I can eat the hash browns and chips, but this was the evening time so what could I have? Since breakfast options were out of bounds I scanned down the list, and found the fish fingers were OK. This was a Happy Meal though. Could I, a 37 year old woman, order a McDonalds Happy Meal?mcdonaldshappymeal

Well I did, and it was plenty filling enough for me. I actually quite enjoyed it too; three chunky fish fingers, chips and a fruit shoot apple juice. Mmmmmmmm. Delicious. I also got the ‘Witch from Shrek’ toy which appears to holding a pumpkin and makes a witchy cackle, shouts “Get him” and “Ogre” when you move her arm up and down; she’s gazing at me malevolently as I’m typing this. I think she is getting a bit bored sitting on my desk, perhaps I should find her a good home. Anyone want my witch Happy Meal Toy?

This weekend I also had a subway baguette; Subway are good because you can see what they are doing right in front of you and you can choose exactly what you want. Their bread doesn’t contain any dairy, I checked, but please ask in case they change their suppliers.

So what’s your favourite McDonalds meal? or other fast food chain outlet? Anyone tried KFC? What’s in their breadcrumb coating?

I just watched a video on YouTube showing McDonalds fries – they didn’t decompose even after 10 weeks. What on earth are they made of?
